2006 ALC Session 2 Staff Bios

Bina Zaitsu: Program Director (bina@viaprograms.org)

Hello everyone! I am so excited to be a part of the ALC 2 program this year. I was born and raised in San Francisco and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Japanese. Once I graduated, I joined the JET program and taught English for two years in Japan. After working in Japan I worked for two and a half years as a coordinator in the JET Program office at the Embassy of Japan. I enjoy traveling, dancing, diving, snowboarding, and catching up with friends.

We are all getting ready for you out here so please let us know if you have any requests we can help you with before you join us. See you soon.

Host

Linda Tran: Senior Claude Buss Fellow Host (lmtran@stanford.edu)

Hi all!  My name is Linda Tran and I'm a Senior majoring in Asian American Studies.  I'll be a super Senior/grad student next year working on my Masters degree in Sociology.  Born and raised in San Jose, CA, I finally ventured out of the Bay to live and study abroad in Japan for about a year (2004-2005).  I love listening to music, black and white movies, strawberry ice cream, and am passionate about fighting for social justice for all.  I was an ALC host my freshman year and now I'm back as a Senior Host to have more fun and ensure everyone has a similar amazing summer experience

Darwin Cruz: Claude Buss Fellow Host

Darwin is a graduating senior from Houston, Texas graduating with a BS in Computer Science. Last year, he spent 5 months in Japan, studying in Kyoto and working for a software company in Tokyo over the summer. His interests include soccer, basketball, swing dancing, Japanese doramas and Star Wars. After the ALC program, he will be moving to Seattle, Washington and begin working full-time with Microsoft.

Julie Len : Claude Buss Fellow Host

Hey everyone!  I’m a rising senior majoring in Biological Sciences and International Relations.  My interests include: international health and human rights, traveling and learning new languages (English, Mandarin, Spanish, and the next one on my list is Swahili!), food, music, movies, dancing (especially hip hop, and I just learned some salsa and tango in Chile and Argentina), dogs and animals in general, sports…and more!  Can’t wait to meet you guys – we’re going to have a blast!

Michael Li: Claude Buss Fellow Host (mikeyli@gmail.com)

Hello! My name is Michael. I am a Stanford student this year majoring in Economics and working towards a Master Degree in Environmental Engineering. I am very excited to be a host fellow for this summer as I look forward to getting to know everyone in the coolest ALC group this summer. My hobbies include basketball, photography, DJ-ing, social dancing and traveling. Whenever I have free time during the school year, I like to socialize with others, watch American TV shows and movies as well as go hiking around the bay area.

Wei Wei Liu: Claude Buss Fellow Host (wwliu@stanford.edu)

Hey everyone! My name is Wei Wei, and I'm a freshman from Los Altos Hills, CA. I'm still undeclared but am interested in Human Biology, Psychology, Economics or English. I'm a Haas Public Service Fellow on campus, and am also involved with the Red Cross. I love reading, tennis, playing the piano and the violin, and traveling. I'm very excited about this summer and look forward to working with you all.

Adam Toda: Claude Buss Fellow Host (magus@stanford.edu)

Hi everyone!  My name is Adam, a senior at Stanford majoring in Symbolic Systems with a concentration in Human-Computer Interaction. This is my first year of involvement in the program, and I am thoroughly excited to be a host this year!  I enjoy all sorts of activities, including basketball, drawing, juggling, snowboarding, dancing, playing video games, and riding-roller coasters just to name a few.  One of my favorite activities, however, is performing the contemporary Japanese ensemble drumming known as taiko.  I've been apart of Stanford Taiko- a student-run performance group on campus-since my freshman year, and I've practiced and performed taiko eversince I was six years old!

I've had the pleasure of studying abroad in Japan for six months inKyoto and Tokyo, so I know what it's like to live in a new place with different cultural practices and a completely different language.  As difficult as it may seem to overcome these barriers, I definitely consider studying abroad one of my most memorable and rewarding experiences.  I hope I can make your time here as enjoyable and memorable as my time was in Japan!  I look forward to meeting you and getting to know you this summer!

Doan Tran: Claude Buss Fellow Host

I'm Doan Lam Tran, but I prefer to be called Lam.  I'm a freshman right now, so I haven't yet decided on my major.  It's very likely that I'll be either a Human Biology or Biological Sciences major.  This is my first year doing ALC and I am very excited for the chance to meet and make international friends.  I was born in Vietnam and my family moved to the U.S. ( Cypress, Texas) when I was 7, so I am definitely looking forward to learning about life in other countries as well!

Lee Wang: Claude Buss Fellow Host

Hi, my name is Lee Wang and I'm first generation Chinese American.  I was born in China and moved to the States (Plano, Texas) when I was 4 years old.  Next year I'll be a Junior majoring in Biological Sciences.  My future goal is to become a doctor.  I like listening to Asian pop music and watching Asian cinema.  I'm excited to be an ALC host and look forward to making friends with you all.
