Kazutoh Ishida: Program Director (kazutoh@viaprograms.org) |
 |
Hello everyone! Thank you for your interest in our American Language and Culture (ALC) Program. I was an ALC participant myself in 1991 and am excited to be involved again, this time as the Program Director. My participation in ALC not only enabled me to learn about the diverse culture of the United States, but it also broadened my perspective about Asia, including my home country Japan. The program also enabled me to develop life-long lasting friendship. I hope your participation in our program will also give you an opportunity to change the way you view the world and also develop friendship which you can treasure for life.
Outside of work, I am currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Hawaii majoring in Japanese language teaching. In my spare time I like to listen to music, watch movies and travel. The staff and the Fellow Stanford Hosts are planning an exciting summer for you and we are looking forward to seeing you this summer at Stanford! |

Hi! My name is Tina Lin and I am a junior majoring in Mathematics. I was born in Taiwan and came to the US when I was 10 years old, so I am very interested in how Asian societies have changed and grown. On my free time, I like to play music (mostly the piano and the French horn), listen to music of all kinds, take walks, and watch movies with friends. At Stanford, I am a co-chair for the Taiwanese Cultural Society, the financial officer of the Stanford University Mathematical Organization, and a French horn player in the Symphony Orchestra and the Wind Ensemble. This summer before VIA, I get to tour Spain, Portugal, and Morroco with the Wind Ensemble. I'm very excited and I hope to come back and share my experiences with you. I am very much looking forward to meeting all of you and having a great time! |

Hi! My name is Janice Ahn and I am a sophomore pursuing a double major in International Relations and Chinese. I grew up in Korea, and speak Korean fluently and some Chinese. I'm planning to study abroad in Beijing University during the first half of my junior year, which I am super excited about! In my free time, I enjoy doing outdoor activities like hiking and hanging out/eating yummy food/shopping with people I love. At Stanford, I am involved in the Asia-Pacific Student Entrepreneurship Society as Director for the annual Summit that we host for students from universities all over Asia. I am also a member of the Korean Students Association.
I really look forward to meeting all of you and making sure that we all have an amazing time this summer! |

Hi everyone. I'm looking forward to a great program this summer, as I'm sure all of you are as well. It's going to be exciting hosting and talking with all of you. Here's a brief bit of information about myself.
I'm a rising Junior at Stanford majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. Currently, I'm studying in Washington, DC and interning at the World Bank. I'm interested in many aspects of foreign affairs, but most recently I've been studying disarmament and peacekeeping. I speak a small amount of Japanese that I'd love to expand. I started taking lessons last year towards a private pilot's license and flying has since become my favorite hobby. I've also been very involved at different levels of our student business association, Stanford Student Enterprises. Next year I'll be the RA in Phi Sig (one of the houses on the row) and after graduation I plan to study and work abroad.
I'm excited to see you all soon! |

Hey everyone! My name is Danny, and I am currently a third year at Stanford majoring in chemical engineering. I am Korean-American and grew up my entire life in New Jersey on the other side of the U.S. Some of my many interests include playing sports (especially baseball and soccer), listening to music, watching movies, playing cards, and traveling. Last summer, I visited Asia for the first time in my life but was only able to explore through Korea. However, I plan on traveling to Taiwan and Japan at some point, possibly even before the ALC program starts this summer.
This is my first year with the ALC program and I am very much looking forward to meeting all of you. It will be a great cross-cultural experience and I am positive we will all have a great time. Definitely feel free to e-mail me for anything before the program; otherwise, I will see you soon! |

Lisa Wong: Claude Buss Fellow Host (huanglisha@hotmail.com) |
 |
Hi! My name is Lisa and I hail from the east coast, New York specifically, so I'm really enjoying the fantastic weather here. I love walking around campus and I'm one of the few people I know of who gets around entirely on foot. I also really enjoy Frisbees, reading, meeting new people, and I'm also trying to learn how to knit right now. I'm currently finishing up my first year at Stanford and I'm still unsure of what I'm going to major in. I do know that I'm interested in traveling and languages, so a major that somehow incorporates those two things. |
