2006 Staff Bios

Chad Morse : Program Director

Hello everyone,
My name is Chad Morse and I will be your Program Director for the 2006 Asia-US Service-Learning Program. I have been running cross-cultural education programs with VIA since 2003 and have marvelled at the impact these experiences have on VIA participants.

I look forward to growing and embracing challenges with all of you this summer. This promises to be a very busy but very rewarding program.

In my spare time, I read books, take walks, spend time with friends and family, and drink lots and lots of coffee.

Momo Waguri : Faculty Advisor

Hello, All!
My name is Momo Waguri and I direct "Action Learning & International Internship Programs" at the Faculty of Policy Studies, Chuo University. I am very much thrilled to be serving as your Faculty Advisor again this year. Stanford is a very special place for me as I did my graduate study at its School of Education--and now with ASL last year and AUSL this year.

The programs at Chuo are to help students cultivate deep sense of caring and responsibility, and become effective "change agents" in their everyday life and beyond, by providing them
opportunities to integrate classroom learning and hands-on, real- life experiences in the field. We offer programs in Sri Lanka and Australia every year. I hope to contribute to AUSL by sharing my experiences running the programs at Chuo.

I love traveling, bird-watching, and dancing salsa & samba. I'm very much looking forward to learning what/how you learn through AUSL this summer, and how AUSL prompts you to take further actions as you go back to your home country. See you soon.

Soar Huang : Health & Disabilities Coordinator- Taiwan

Hello, everyone! Let me welcome you as participants in American Service Learning program of VIA.I hope everyone is looking forward to this summer as I do. I am going to be your coordinator in Health and Disabilities this summer. Currently I’m a junior at National Taiwan University, majoring in psychology. I’m interesting in health and disability issues especially those with mental disorders. My long term goal is to go abroad for graduate studies in psychology and pursue my future career in relevant field.

Outside of school curriculum, I participate in Whale & Dolphin club in my university thus I have load of chances to discuss environmental issues and explore the natural beauty of Taiwan. I love traveling, meeting new faces, sharing and exchanging ideas and experiences with friends. Can’t wait for this summer to meet you guys!!

Yoshifumi Kawasaki : Education Coordinator - Japan

Hi, everyone!! I'm Yoshifumi Kawasaki and just call me 'Yoshi'. I'm a junior at University of Tokyo, majoring in ....um..... something related with languages, but I haven't quite decided my major yet. I like studying new foreign languages and have been studying English, Spanish, Portuguese, and German. Other than that, I'm interested in some fields of education, such as literacy, language teaching(especially, that for foreigners), education in developing countries etc.

i like singing (sometimes old songs) very much and do so everywhere whenever i want to. Yeah you could easily guess sometimes i sing with my friends all through the night at karaoke! I also love playing sports . we can have lots of time to play ping-pong and Frisbee at Stanford. Exercising under the California sun is really refreshing.

My favorites are pancakes with maple syrup, cafe mocha, and apricot-kernel tofu and so on.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing you guys this summer and having a wonderful time!

Haruka Shiramizu : Environment and Agriculture Coordinator - Japan

Hi there! Welcome to AUSL! I am a sophomore at Waseda University, majoring in Economics. Since I joined American Service Learning last summer, I have been influenced by the program a lot, especially by the friends of ASL. People with various backgrounds, characters, and interests will allow you to get a broader view of the world, and will stimulate you to try a new thing. I hope AUSL brings you many wonderful friends you will keep in touch with for a long time.

I am interested in globalization, especially in the challenges it presents us. Currently, I am focusing on the globalization of agriculture, for food is essential thing to human beings, and moreover, I like to eat healthy food! My happiest time is to cook, and to eat with my family or friends with talking.I’m often impressed by the beauty of nature, and that I’d like to live less harmfully to the environment: choose food and products that are made in a sustainable or a less harmful way, try not to buy unnecessary stuffs, etc.

I love traveling, listening to music, painting, chatting with friends, playing with my 10-year-old rabbit, and eating organic vegetables with her. I really look forward to meeting all of you and to making unforgettable memories.

Satoshi Nakazawa : Urbani Issues Coordinator - Japan

Hi everyone. I'm Satoshi and I’m currently a senior at Chuo University, majoring Policy Studies.

I had been involved in Service Learning Program in U.S. from the beginnig of my freshman year. In the last twice of the programs, I found a new self through the volunteer works and discussions with other students. I could never
thought what the "service" is untill joining these programs, and that process gave me some hints to know who I am. I am still groping for my answer. AUSL 2006 would be the last Study-Service tour in my college life, so I will try to find an answer to the question, and also, try to activate this program! I am looking forward to meeting you all!

Ngai-Chi Chung : Environment and Agriculture Coordinator - Stanford

Hi! I am Ngai-Chi Chung (pronounced Ai Chee, just like the Aichi
prefecture), and I am a senior in Civil Engineering and a masters in
Management Science & Engineering. I love eating different foods, playing
sports and video games, talking, and just hanging out. I am from around
here in East Bay. I am interested in energy, environment, and business, and
I am always up for learning and seeing new things. I was a host in ALC
2004 and I loved it, and I look forward to meeting you all and having a
memorable summer!

Di Dang : Urban Issues Coordinator - Stanford

Hi everyone! My name is Di and I am originally from Houston, Texas. I'm a sophomore here at Stanford, majoring in Philosophy. I'm probably going to take on another major or minor, but not certain in what yet. I enjoy reading fiction and poetry, and learning more about film history and art history. In general, I really enjoy anything that has to do with the fine arts, like watching good films, visiting art museums frequently, attending classical music performances, attending plays and musicals, etc. I am also very interested in learning more about other cultures. I want to travel the world. I know that a lot of people say this, but I fully intend on realizing this.

I'm really excited about AUSL because it'll give me the chance to further explore the topics of urban issues that I'm most interested in, like homelessness and immigration, while working with you to develop our own project to understand how best we can contribute our talents towards making our world a better place. I'm really looking forward to meeting ya'll this summer!

Christine Chang : Health and Disabilities Coordinator - Stanford

Hi! I’m Christine, a senior majoring in Human Biology with a minor in Psychology. My area of concentration within my major is Women’s Health. When not in class or hanging around the dorm, I might be found running amuck banging on drums with Stanford’s Hwimori Korean Drumming group (er, no, I’m not actually Korean), volunteering at Pacific Free Clinic, or playing with mice at the lab I research in. I’m a premedical student and am interested in healthcare issues, as well as various other topics such as assisted reproductive technologies.
I hail from Miami, Florida (where the two seasons are “rainy or sunny”) and I’m probably one of the only people you’ll hear complain about how cold it gets at Stanford (although I’m a big fan of the huge mosquito eaters!). I have two younger brothers and like to swing dance!

Amy Carlson : Education Coordinator - Stanford

Hi, everyone! My name is Amy Carlson, and I'm currently a senior majoring in Human Biology at Stanford. I'll be one of the Stanford coordinators for the AUSL education project this summer, and I'm looking forward to sharing another great VIA experience with you guys. This will actually be my third year working for VIA. I was a host for the American Language and Culture (ALC) program during my sophomore year, and then I became a project coordinator for the AUSL program (formerly American Service Learning, or ASL) last summer. My interests are quite diverse: I like hiking, traveling to SE Asia, reading good books, wandering around San Francisco, hanging out at the beach, and spending quality time with friends. After graduating from college, I hope to pursue a career in either public health or medicine. I love working with children, and I've spent the past three summers volunteering at an orphanage in Thailand with my mother and sister.

Cheng Boon "C-Bo" Yap : Environment and Agiculture Coordinator- Stanford

Hello everyone! My name is Cheng Boon Yap, but everyone calls me C-Bo. I'm a junior at Stanford University, and I'm pursuing a bachelors degree in environmental engineering as well as a masters degree in civil and environmental engineering. My interests, however, is not limited to engineering and science. Stanford has many incredible resources and I am able to explore many other interests ranging from French to gymnastics. So, I have to say I'm really having a great time at school!

Liberty Reforma : Health and Disabilities Coordinator - Stanford

Liberty Reforma is a sophomore studying Human Biology with an Area of
Concentration in Cross-Cultural Issues in Health and Human Behavior.
She is also a pre-med student who knows that she wants to work in the
field of health and medicine, but is not quite sure what area she
wants to specialize in. Originally born in the Philippines, she was
raised in Sugar Land, Texas where she lives with her parents and her
older sister Harmony and older brother Lee. Besides the field of
medicine, Liberty is also interested in anthropology, creative
writing, English literature, Filipino and Asian American issues, and
history. In her free time, she likes to shop, go to concerts, find
adventure (whatever that may mean), and save the world. Ask her more
about Sugar Land, Stanford life, and how she got her name.

Antonieta "Toti" Moreland: Education Coordinator - Stanford

Hi everyone, my name is Antonieta Moreland, otherwise known as Toti, and I am a third year undergraduate at Stanford University. I am majoring in History, and possibly minoring in Italian. I will be working as one of the Stanford coordinators for the AUSL education project this summer, along with Amy and Yoshi, and I am really excited about being able to share this amazing educational experience with all of you. I recently returned from spending 8 months abroad in Italy and traveling around Europe, and thoroughly enjoy visiting new places around the world and meeting diverse groups of people. In my free time I enjoy tutoring and mentoring young students, in hopes of passing my enthusiasm and love for learning on to them. I plan on pursuing a career in education after graduating. I also enjoy spending time with my friends and family, reading good books, and watching really cheesy romantic movies.

Kat Lee : Urban Issues Coordinator - Stanford

Greetings everyone! My name is Katherine- a.k.a. just “Kat.” I come from the East Coast- Miami, Florida so I love the sun and anything warm! I am a senior studying psychology and sociology, and am looking into a career in public health in the future, perhaps in behavioral medicine or prevention research. For next year, though, I will take a year off to backpack in Europe, and travel in South Africa and Asia. As you can tell I love traveling and exploring different cultures, and AUSL is one way for me to do this. I look forward to working with and getting to know you!

I enjoy reading leisurely, swimming and running, and hanging out watching movies and talking with friends. I also enjoy poking around in cities and finding out what’s neat about them. I love anything outdoors, especially the beach and watching sunrises.

I have always wanted to explore urban issues hands-on, so I am very excited to embark in the service-learning adventure with you. It’s going to be an absolutely wonderful summer!
