Service in the US and Asia: Week 2

Monday, Aug. 14: Education for the Economically Disadvantaged

Guest Speaker: Jeni Williams, AmeriCorps member and assistant teacher
at East Palo Alto High School. East Palo Alto is a VERY poor city
located right next to Palo Alto and Stanford; most of the children
attending EPA High School are very poor, and most of them are
minorities (i.e. Black or Hispanic). Jeni is going to talk about the
school system in EPA and the challenges that she faced working with the
children at EPA High School. Here's the website for East Palo

Tuesday, Aug. 15: Education for Prisoners

 

Guest Speaker: Jody Lewen, Director of the Prison University Project at
San Quentin Prison. Jody is going to talk about the importance and
critical need for prisoner education in the U.S. She will also talk
about her experience teaching and counseling the convicts / prisoners
at San Quentin. Finally, she'll talk to us about what we can expect to
see / experience during our group visit to San Quentin during Project
Week.

Wednesday, Aug. 16: Education for People with Disabilities

 

Guest Speaker: John Rumsey, Executive Director of Marin Ventures (an
organization that serves individuals with developmental disabilities)

John Rumsey is the founding staff member of Marin Ventures. Prior to
working for Marin Ventures, Mr. Rumsey was Vice President of
Rehabilitation Services for North Bay Industries. Mr. Rumsey received a
Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Drew University and a Masters in
Rehabilitation Administration from the University of San Francisco.
John will talk about what "education" means for
people with severe developmental disabilities and prepare us for our
service work at Marin Ventures during Project Week.

Thursday, Aug. 17: Education for Immigrants

 

Guest Speaker: Annie Hughes, VIA Alumna (Laos/199-2001) and Public
School Teacher in Stockton, California

Ms. Hughes has worked as a public school teacher in Stockton, CA for
the past 19 years. Many of her students over the years have been
Laotian, Hmong, Khmu, and Cambodian. Her passion in education has been
"connecting immigrant students with school, their culture, art, and
music." She will talk to us about the challenges that she has faced as
a teacher trying to integrate immigrant children into the American
public school system.

Service Project Week

Saturday, August 19

  • 8 a.m. - Arrive at Sacred Heart Community Service in downtown San Jose
    (http://www.shcstheheart.org/about/index.html). Meet with Todd
    Maddigan, Volunteer Coordinator, and participate in brief orientation
    session
  • 9 a.m. to noon - Volunteer at SHCS. Activity descriptions:
  • Louise’s Pantry Volunteer
    Unload and sort donations; make family food bags & lunches for the
    homeless; serve customers. Deliver lunches to local shelters & assist
    with Food Bank Delivery during noontime hours.
  • Clothes Closet Volunteer
    Help ensure our customers receive free clothing by hanging & sorting
    clothes, waiting on customers, greeting donors & accepting clothing
    donations
  • 12 to 1 p.m. - Short debriefing with Todd; hear about some of the
    educational services that SHCS provides for immigrants and underserved
    individuals in the San Jose community
  • 3 to 4 p.m. - Meet with Debra David, Director (and founder) of the
    Center for Service Learning at SJSU. She'll talk about the unique role
    that service-learning plays at SJSU
  • 6 to 9 p.m. - Dinner and hanging out in downtown San Jose
  • Lodging: HI San Jose (Saratoga)

Sunday, August 20

  • To be determined

Monday, August 21

  • 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Full day of volunteer work with elderly immigrants at John XXIII in
    San Jose
  • 4 p.m. - Drive to the hostel in Marin; make a quick
    dinner and then go to bed early before a long two days of volunteering
    at Marin Ventures
  • Lodging: HI - Marin Headlands

  • Volunteering with Marin Ventures.

Thursday, August 24

  • Spend the morning exploring the beautiful Muir Woods; Drive to San
    Quentin Prison
  • 2 p.m. - Visit San Quentin and meet some of the students of "Prison
    University
    ;" private inside tour led by Jody Lewen, Director of the
    Prison University Project.
  • 5 p.m. - Drive down to San Francisco (with Jody) and have dinner at the
    Delancey Street Restaurant (owned and managed by former convicts);
    hopefully find someone who can tell us a bit more about the history of
    the Delancey Street Foundation.
  • Lodging: HI - San Francisco hostel (either City Center or Fisherman's
    Wharf location; TBA).

Friday, August 25

  • 8:30: Arrive at St. Anthony's Learning/Employment Center to sit in on
    one of their weekly/monthly career discussion groups. This will be followed by
    a tour of the facility and introductions to staff members and guests.
  • 11:00: Meet with Alyson Jacks at HOME AWAY FROM HOMELESSNESS and she
    will show us a video and give us a rundown of the program.
  • 2:00 SF Urban Institute: Meet with Ms. Komasa and a group of staff
    members
    in charge of Teen Parent Program.
  • 3:30 Arrive at Good Samaritan and meet with Ms. Aparicio about education
    programs offered.
