6:30pm: Meet at the parking lot of Kappa Sigma to depart for San Francisco

8pm: RENT…This well-known musical, performed in San Francisco, deals with such issues as poverty and HIV/AIDS.


August 6, Sunday

7-8am: Breakfast in Florence Moore Dining Hall

9am: Meet at the parking lot of Kappa Sigma to depart for Sunnyvale

9:30am-3:30pm: Sunnyvale Community Garden Service Project…Urban and sub-urban gardens offer a place for community, education, and public service. We'll learn about how the new Sunnyvale Community Garden was created and work alongside garden members.

9:30-9:45am: Welcome by Josh Salens, President of Sunnyvale Community Garden.

3:30pm: Depart for Stanford

4:15pm: Check-in for SUA1

5:30pm: Dinner (available at Florence Moore, but participants are free to dine off campus in Palo Alto at their own expense)

9am: Service in the US and Asia: The introductory class of our two-week workshop course at Kappa Sigma

10-11am: Jedd Medefind, Director, Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, US Dept of Labor. Summary.

11am-12pm: Discussion

12:15pm: Lunch in Florence Moore Dining Hall

2-5pm: Chad will be giving instructions again to everyone at 2pm at Kappa Sigma. Group Presentation Work Period #2: —“Tentative Outline”.  For HD group, “Revised Outline”.

3:45-7pm: Picnic at the Oval: You will have a chance to meet students participating in VIA's ALC 1 and 2 programs and have dinner with them at Oval located at the entrance of the Stanford campus.

7:30-8pm: Coordinator meeting at Kappa Sigma

8-9pm: Study Hall at Kappa Sigma Lounge.  This is a time for reading, group work, and reflection. Coordinators will be available for guidance.

August 12, Saturday

7:45am: Meet at the parking lot of Kappa Sigma to depart for SF.

9am-2pm: St. Anthony Foundation Number of Students: 10 (Signup Sheet--preference given to non-Urban Issues participants)

St. Anthony Foundation is an organization in San Francisco that provides food and other services to the city's poor and homeless population. St. Anthony's kitchen provides meals to thousands of people every day. The organization also delivers meals to the homes and apartments of people who are too sick to leave.

Our group will be learning about homelessness in San Francisco, helping serve food to the poor, working in the foundation's used clothing shop, and talking with St. Anthony's patrons.

9am-2pm: Glide Memorial Church is a vibrant, diverse church in San Francisco's poor tenderloin district. It has a long history of inclusiveness and social justice programs. We will be working in Glide's large soup kitchen.

2:15-3pm: Meet as a whole group (place to be determined).  Reporting back.

3pm: Free afternoon in the city.  Please sign up for options.


August 13, Sunday

***Health & Disabilities group departs for Camp Costanoan. Departure time to be announced.

Free Day at Stanford!  Breakfast, lunch, and dinner available at Florence Moore Dining Hall as always, but participants can go eat out elsewhere at their own expense.

  • 2:00 pm - : Stern Grove Festival (Cost: Free): As America’s first professional ballet company, San Francisco Ballet has enjoyed a long and rich tradition of artistic “firsts” since its founding in 1933, performing the first American productions of Swan Lake and Nutcracker, as well as the first twentieth-century American Coppélia. A lively, vital ensemble, San Francisco Ballet is one of the three largest ballet companies in the United States.

5:30-8:30pm: Final Event at World Affairs Council of San Francisco
American Service-Learning's Final Event gives each service project group the opportunity to share their experiences and reflections with non-profit leaders, former VIA volunteers, and interested members of the public. Each group will give a short presentation and several keynote speaches will emphasize the main themes of the program. This formal event brings ASL to a close with style and significance
