1. Wilderness restoration / state parks
2. Sustainable development
3. Urban environmental issues
Project Overview
The world and its resources shrink day by day, as the global population explodes and urbanizes. We are already feeling the effects of overtaxing the planet’s resources, as we become cramped within cities, as fishing catches decrease, and beautiful landscapes are paved over. Today, people are realizing the urgency of environmental issues and how important it is to act.
In the service week, students will explore environmental issues, learning about wilderness restoration in Santa Cruz state parks, sustainable development in Monterey, and the role of city government and urban green space in San Francisco. We will get our hands dirty working on a restoration project, go on hikes, have an optional visit to the Monterey Aquarium, hear speakers about sustainable development, Cannery Row, and the role of city government, visit a landfill, tour a recycling facility and its recycled art sculpture garden and more! Other possibilities include touring a green building, kayaking in Monterey Bay, touring a water treatment facility, volunteering in a community garden, and hearing speakers from an environmental justice organization.
We will see the many sides of environmental issues, from beautiful scenery in the state parks of Santa Cruz and the Monterey area to looking at the city, a landfill, and an oil refinery. Expect to learn a lot, see a lot, and have a lot of fun!
