Research Assignments and Session Topics

Overview of Research Assignment:
  • Familiarize participants with health care issues in their own country.
  • Enrich AUSL discussions by giving participants greater ability to compare and contrast how different countries address environmental issues.
  • Prepare participants for their final project.
Research Schedule:

May-July: Independent research
July 27:  Email Bina (bina@viaprograms.org) your research paper.
August:  You will share your research for assignment 2 with the rest of your group and the group will compare your research to the topics discussed in the discussion session (this is not a presentation). You will have about 10-15 minutes to share your research.

Assignment #1: Please answer these questions about health care in your country:

  • What is the health care system like in your country?
  • Who gets health care? Who doesn’t?
  • How much do people pay for health services? What happens if they can’t afford it?
  • What are some positive and negative aspects about the healthcare system in your country? How can it be improved?
Assignment #2: Physical and Mental Disabilities
  • Research different types of physical and mental disabilities. What are the more common disabilities in your country?
  • How do people in your society view people with physical and/or mental disabilities?
  • What are the needs of people with physical and/or mental disabilities?
  • What are services that are provided for people with physical and mental disabilities in your country?
    1. How does the government help these communities?
    2. How do NPOs help these communities (please share an example of an NPO)?
    3. Are there student groups that help?
    4. Are there corporations that help(with donations and such)?
Assignment #2: Elderly Care
  • What percentage of the population in your country is elderly?
  • How do people in your society view the elderly?
  • What are the needs of the elderly?
  • What are services that are provided for the elderly?
    1. How does the government help this community?
    2. How do NPOs help this community (please share an example of an NPO)?
    3. Are there student groups that help?
    4. Are there corporations that help (with donations and such)?

    Assignment #2: HIV/AIDS
  • What percentage of the population in your country has HIV/AIDS?
  • How do people in your society view people with HIV/AIDS?
  • How are people educated about HIV/AIDS?
  • What are the needs of people with HIV/AIDS?
  • What are services that are provided for people with HIV/AIDS in your country?
    1. How does the government help this community?
    2. How do NPOs help this community (please share an example of an NPO)?
    3. Are there student groups that help?
    4. Are there corporations that help (with donations and such)
Assignment #2: Health Care for the Underserved
  • What percentage of the population in your country is not insured?
  • How do these people get health care?
  • What are the most common health care needs for people who are homeless or in poverty?
  • What are services that are provided for people with out insurance?
    1. How does the government help this community?
    2. How do NPOs help this community (please share an example of an NPO)?
    3. Are there academic institutions that help?
    4. Are there corporations that help (with donations and such)?
